I start earning my own money in December 2019, when I started working after college, before that I was comfortable enough with the money my mother kindly gave to me (thank you, mom). I’ve learned how to manage myself and how to save some money aside each month to later invest.

I'm not addicted to anything in particular so I don't have important fixed expenses. Also, I live with my mom so I'm also lucky enough to not have to pay for living arrangements, in other words: The basics.

My relationship with money has changed and now I am more selective with it, just like I am with my time and energy.

I realized that most of the things I would spend money on, would not make me happy or be beneficial to me in the long term.

If this happens to you, here is how you are going to change your mindset:

Buy yourself the f*cking flowers:

This comes in reference to a fantastic book I am currently reading by Tara Schuster. A book about the life rituals you should follow to fix your life.

She says that you have to find what makes you happy and simply BUY IT for your own good. For Tara, it was 7$ lilies to make her house prettier. For me, my skincare products and an appointment with the girl who wonderfully does my eyebrows. What is it to you? Find it and invest the money in you.

Don't EVER feel the pressure to spend

If your friends want to go to a fancy dinner with other friends that you don't like as much, please do me a favor and don't go. You might regret it forever and you will be poorer. You don't want this because you are working on your mental health and your finances.

You don’t want to find yourself in a situation in which you spent money on something that didn’t make you feel good and you don’t have money to invest in what will.

Be grateful for what you invested if it made you happier

If you really needed it, wanted it, dreamed of it, and you got it, BE GRATEFUL, and don’t put yourself down for it.

Two weeks ago I had to go away from the city for 3 days because I mentally and physically collapsed because of the collective cocktail of chaos, and I ‘spent so much money’ on the hotel, something I normally do not do, BUT the experience of being in nature and disconnecting from the buzziness made it so worth it and I do not regret a single moment of it even if now I have to be more cautions on what I spend this month.

Put money aside

Some people will say that saving money is not worth it because you need to invest it to multiply it. I agree with these people but I also have to tell you that to invest money you have to have the money to invest- therefore, save it. Also if something happens you should be comfortable knowing you can go through the situation because you have the money at that exact moment.

“The situation” doesn’t have to be an emergency, it could be that you want to buy a piece of art that will turn around your house’s aesthetic. Again, invest in what will benefit you and your surroundings.

If you are a F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan like me you will recognize these lines:

Ross: I just never think of money as an issue.
Rachel: That’s ’cause you have it.

You have the money. Be selective on where it goes once you covered your basics. Be wise to benefit yourself with gifts and experiences which will count more than regretting not having done them.
